My interest in psychology began with an interest in people's differences and similarities. While earning my undergraduate degree, I enjoyed learning about different cultures and societies. That interest led me to look at individuals and how they respond similarly and differently to life's situations and their surroundings. During graduate school I learned many approaches to helping others learn about themselves and others. Now, I help individuals and families appreciate the similarities and differences of people surrounding them. I enjoy helping people attain skills to adapt or change their thinking, feelings or behavior so they feel more comfortable with their life and the people in it. I use a variety of therapy techniques because every client deserves a personalized approach.
At this time I see children, adolescents and young adults. I offer individual and group counseling. I like working with a variety of issues, and I most enjoy helping people learn skills regarding:
- Calming Overwhelming Feelings
- Understanding Yourself and Others
- Communication
- Decision Making
- Managing Stress and Anger
All of these skills work for all ages.
I help parents cope with their children and teenagers while they learn these essential skills that will benefit children throughout life.
Young adulthood is an awesome time for self exploration. I really enjoy helping teens and young adults "find themselves" and learn to cope with the challenges of becoming independent.
I have a Master's Degree in Counseling from Trevecca Nazarene University. I am credentialed by the State of Tennessee as a Licensed Professional Counselor with a Mental Health Service Provider designation, and I am a board eligible National Certified Counselor.
My professional experience is varied in settings and age groups. I have had experience with clients who have significant enough issues to require in-patient treatment. I have also had experience in community mental health settings where I worked with families and individuals to help them achieve more peace and stability in their lives. As a school counselor, I worked with children, parents, and teachers to help children thrive in their schools. In my private practice, I have worked with people who want to change and improve their lives. I have worked with people who have the clinical issues listed below as well as with people who have other clinical issues.
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Bi-Polar
- ADHD
- Impulse Control
- Pre-Marital Counseling
- Perfectionism and Obsessive Compulsive Tendencies
- Parenting and Discipline Problems
- Bully Prevention and Support for Victims
- Post Divorce Support
- Social skills education
What to Expect
Counseling sessions are generally 50 minutes in length. The first couple of sessions are a time for us to get to know one another. It is important for me to learn about your personal history and your goals for counseling. It is important for you to express yourself as freely as you feel comfortable and to ask as many questions about the process of psychotherapy as you wish. I believe that our therapeutic relationship is fundamental to your success in therapy. Self exploration and change can be overwhelming at times so it is important to have a trusted partner to rely on.
At the first or second session we will decide together what your treatment plan will look like. This includes how often you will attend sessions and what the overall goals of therapy will be. Most people come for weekly sessions, although some people come more or less often than that. In addition, some people choose to have longer or shorter sessions.
Group Counseling
I also offer on-going group counseling, which is a very affordable way to attend therapy.
Groups are available for children, adolescents, and young adults. Groups are small (4-5 attendees), with different groups according to age and topic.
Available Topics:
Be the Boss of Your Anger (Recognize out of control anger · Learn skills to control anger · Manage conflict · More)
Social Skills (Increase self esteem · Get along with others · Learn to be responsible · Manage conflict · More)
Support for Children of Divorce (Understand Divorce · Handle feelings that come with divorce · Communicate with both parents · More)
Don't Be a Bully Target (Understand the bully who is targeting you · Learn to handle bullies · Rebuild your self esteem · More)
Be the Boss of Your Emotions (Understand your feelings · Communicate more effectively · Increase comfortable feelings · Deal effectively with uncomfortable feelings · More)
Availability and Fees
I am available weekday evenings and Saturday afternoons. At this time I am exploring options with insurance companies, but am not currently contracted with any. My fee is entirely self pay. Because of this, I have set my rates at a very reasonable price. Payment is expected at the time of service. I have limited sliding scale slots available for those who are unable to pay the full fee.
Something to Think About
Do you have a person or a situation in your life that is causing you worry or anger?
We can't change others, but we can change how we view or react to others and encourage others to change if they decide to do so. It is possible to learn new skills to attain a new attitude or to explore old habits that could be getting in the way of having the relationships you desire. It is possible to learn a new approach to dealing with difficult situations in your life.
I invite you to call for a free phone consultation so we can discuss your questions and concerns.
